Florida registered interns cannot count supervised hours unless they work under a Qualified Supervisor (QS).
If you are a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), Licensed Marriage And Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), becoming a QS lets you guide the next generation of clinicians, grow your practice and meet a real need in your community.
Here is the process under Chapter 491, Florida Statutes, and Rule 64B4-6.0025, Florida Administrative Code, explained in plain steps.
Experience requirements depend on your license:
Your license must be active and in good standing.
After licensure, you must complete supervision training that meets Rule 64B4-6.0025. The most common route is a 12 hour course from an approved continuing education provider. The rule requires the course to be taught live, with real-time interaction and monitored attendance.
It must cover models of supervision, developing your own model, supervisory relationship dynamics, cultural and power issues, ethical and legal issues, Florida laws and rules on interns and supervision, and evaluation of interns.
Other routes the Board recognizes include a qualifying graduate course, a post-graduate field instructor course (LCSW and LMHC), the CCE Approved Clinical Supervisor credential (LMHC), or AAMFT Approved Supervisor status.
Our 12 Hour Qualified Supervisor Training is held live via Zoom, 8 AM–7 PM ET, every month. Upcoming dates include Sat Nov 7 2026, Mon Dec 7 2026, Mon Jan 18 2027 and Mon Feb 15 2027. Registration is $245 for anyone who registers before Jan 1, 2027, for any future date ($260 from Jan 1, 2027).
You may supervise interns in your own profession. To supervise another profession, your transcript must show specific graduate coursework.
For example, an LCSW or LMFT supervising a registered mental health counselor intern needs a graduate course covering three of six counseling areas (theories, practice, assessment, career, substance abuse, legal and ethical).
LMFT intern supervisors need marriage and family systems coursework, and LCSW intern supervisors need social work theory coursework from a CSWE-accredited program.
Complete Form DH-MQA 5049, the Qualified Supervisor Affirmation Statement, and attach proof of your supervision training. If you plan to supervise another profession, also complete the education verification section. Email it to mqa.qualifiedsupervisor@flhealth.gov or fax it to 850-413-6982.
There is no fee, and your license number does not change.
Do not begin supervision until the Board confirms your status. Once approved, your QS status appears on your public license verification. Before each intern starts, confirm the intern's registration and sign a letter agreeing to supervise.
Supervisors keep a supervision log, report violations and terminations to the Board within seven days, and may supervise up to 25 registered interns at once. Every third biennium, QS must complete 4 hours of supervision training, which counts toward the 30 hour renewal total.
Our 4 Hour QS Renewal Course covers that requirement.
Florida licensed psychologists may serve as QS for registered mental health counselor interns only. They need three years of psychotherapy experience with at least 750 hours of direct client contact per year, plus qualifying supervision training. Confirm the details with the Board before submitting.
How Long Does It Take To Become A Qualified Supervisor In Florida?
Once you meet the experience requirement, you can complete the 12 hour training in one day and submit Form DH-MQA 5049 right away. Processing time depends on the Board.
Does The 12 Hour QS Training Have To Be Live?

The Board charges no fee for the affirmation statement. You pay only for your training course.
How Many Interns Can A Qualified Supervisor Supervise?
Up to 25 registered interns at the same time.
Do Qualified Supervisors Need Extra CE At Renewal?
